Inuyama Castle

The Inuyama Castle was built in 1537 by an uncle of one of Japan's greatest samurai warriors. It is the oldest standing castle in Japan. The largest configuration of the castle was completed around the time of the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. In 1871, abolition of the clan system and establishment of the prefectures resulted in a a government seizure of the castle. Most of the surrounding buildings were demolished, but the central keep and the stone were left intact. It was designated a National Treasure in 1935.
